Tax in Australia

An introduction

Understanding the Australian tax system is important for all new workers.

This information could help you, a friend or family member.

Doing tax returns

The financial year ends 30 June.

You can lodge your own tax return online.

Use MyGov and link it to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to use MyTax.

If you wait till late July, you don’t need to manually enter data from statements because your bank, employer, and superannuation fund will supply data to the ATO to pre-fill your tax return.

This video is a quick demonstration of how to lodge a tax return online using MyTax.

MRC Tas is a partner in the ATO Tax Help program. Volunteers help people with simple tax affairs to lodge their tax return.

See the Tax Time page on the MRC Tas website for more information.

The University of Tasmania Tax Clinic can be used by students, and also is a volunteering opportunity for students.
